Matric/ Grade 12 plus an appropriate three year National Diploma (NQF level 6) or Bachelor of Science Degree (NQF Level 7) in Animal Health or relevant qualification as recognized by SAQA. 2 – 3 years’ experience within the livestock industry or state veterinary services. Must have a valid registration certificate with the South African Veterinary Council (SAVC). Must be in possession of a valid code B driver’s license. COMPETENCIES: Computer literacy. Good communication skills (both verbal and written), interpersonal skills, excellent planning and organising, report writing, critical problem solving, creativity and project management skills and good management of people. A team orientation and networking abilities. Knowledge and understanding of related animal health and food safety legislation and regulations. Understanding of principles of farm biosecurity, farm compartmentalization and the South African pig and poultry farming systems. Knowledge of animal disease outbreak control and surveillance.
To routinely inspect ZA compartmentalized pig and poultry farms within the province and adhering to strict farm biosecurity protocols which will require to shower-in and change into protective clothing provided by the facility. To maintain the biosecurity inspection records in accordance with the requirements of the quality management system as per ISO 17020:2012. To maintain the movement permit system for all compartmentalized pig farms, exercise veterinary control and inspections with respect to landfills and galley waste sites. To occasionally assist with transfer of technical and practical good agricultural practices knowledge to emerging pig and poultry farmers and those targeted for commercialization as well as any other technical livestock production and health functions which will be required from time to time. Contribute to the success of Gauteng Veterinary Services by working across chief-directorate boundaries to strengthen team effectiveness. To demonstrate the highest ethical standards at all times.
