Modern data analysis employs sophisticated methods such as machine learning that go well beyond the roll-up and drill-down capabilities of traditional SQL query engines. The mission of the Photon team is to create the next generation execution engine that can outperform specialized SQL query engines in relational query performance, yet retain the flexibility of Spark to support diverse workloads ranging from ETL to data science.
As an Engineering Manager, you will:
Recruit a world-class software engineering team, from sourcing to closing.
Drive strategic vision for the team and product.
Establish high technical standards through processes and culture.
Mentor and coach engineers to help them carve out a fulfilling career.
Deliver infrastructure and product to make our customers’ lives better, and to support Databricks’ record-breaking growth.
Evangelize and uphold our cultural principles: be customer obsessed, be data-driven, team work makes the dream work, and own it.
Manage technical debt and balance product roadmap.
BS/MS/PhD in Computer Science, or a related field
5+ years of hands-on engineering experience, in C/C++.
Deep understanding of performance engineering.
Experience building and leading teams in a related area e.g. distributed data systems, database internals -or- demonstrated ability to quickly learn new concepts in a complex technical space.
Demonstrated ability to attract, hire, and coach world-class engineers. Can uplevel existing team via hiring top-notch senior talent, growing leaders and helping struggling members. Can gain trust of team and guide their careers.
Comfort working cross functionality with product management and directly with customers; ability to deeply understand product and customer personas.
