The Chemistry Department at UCL is one of the top-ranked departments in the UK, with 100% of its outputs ranked as being world-leading (4*) or internationally excellent (3*) in the recent REF2021. The Department is committed to supporting excellence in both research and teaching. The department offers undergraduate BSc and MSci programmes in Chemistry and currently teaches 700 undergraduates registered in Chemistry as well as students who select Chemistry on the Natural Sciences programme and first year Chemistry for life scientists. The Department also offers a number of Postgraduate Taught Masters courses with about 100 students per year. The Department has an overall PhD student school of around 200 students. The Chemistry Department has over 60 members of academic staff carrying out world-leading research. About the role

The Department of Chemistry seeks to appoint an Experimental Officer with experience in electron microscopy to provide essential experimental support to the Electron Microscopy Facility in the Department. The post-holder will provide technical and scientific support to research groups using the instruments in the facility. The post-holder will have the opportunity to develop their knowledge through general technical staff support as well as more in-depth involvement in the running and maintenance of the electron microscopes. The post-holder will be a member of the technical support team. This is an open-ended position that is departmentally funded. The position is available January 2023.

About you

The successful candidate will have an Undergraduate degree in Chemistry or a related discipline along with substantial experience in electron microscopy, imaging and analytical science. They must have hands-on experience in operating high vacuum and high voltage equipment, experience of imaging samples in electron microscopes and possess excellent communication skills with the ability to work collaboratively and to manage their own workload to meet critical deadlines.

What we offer

The post is offered at UCL grade 7, the salary for which ranges from £38,308 – £46,155 per annum (including London Allowance of £4,000p.a.). Starting salary is usually £38,308. All posts that are based outside of London, for example at Harwell, will not have London Allowance included in the salary.
