Job Functions, Duties, Responsibilities and Position Qualifications:

Job Summary:

Performs routine chemical, biological, hematological, immunologic, microscopic, and bacteriological analyses for diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease.

Essential Key Responsibilities:

Conducts chemical analyses of body fluids such as blood, urine, and spinal fluid, to determine presence of normal and abnormal components.

Makes cultures of body fluid and tissue samples to determine the presence of bacteria, fungi, parasites, or other microorganisms.

Studies blood cells, their numbers, and morphology.

Performs blood group, type, and compatibility tests for transfusion purposes.

Analyzes test results and enters micro and blood banking results into the information system for storage.

Analyzes samples for chemical content or a chemical reaction and determine concentrations of compounds such as blood glucose and cholesterol levels.

Establishes and monitors quality assurance programs and activities to ensure the accuracy of laboratory results.

Operates, calibrates, and maintains equipment used in quantitative and qualitative analysis.

Performs routine preventative maintenance on assigned instruments and equipment according to established schedule and procedure.

Verifies instrument functioning by checking and calibrating specific lab instruments and documents data.

Records on instrument logs any repairs, replacement, and maintenance needed of equipment.

Evaluates test results, develops and modifies procedures, and establishes and monitors programs to ensure the accuracy of tests.

Maintains strictest confidentiality.

Complies with all State, Federal, professional regulations as well as company and departmental rules, polices, and procedural manuals.

Adherence to CAP, CLIA, State Regulations, HIPAA, Safety and OSHA Regulations.

Performs other duties as assigned.


Associate’s Degree in the field of Laboratory Science or equivalent under the 1988 Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) guidelines of high complexity testing.

Completion of a Medical Laboratory Technician program accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS).

State licensure, if applicable.


1 year of practical laboratory experience preferred.


Successful completion of an Online Medical Terminology Program upon commencement of employment.

Successful completion of a pre-employment visual color discrimination test.

Successful completion of annual continuing education units per state licensure and/or ASCP or AMT guidelines.


Computers, computer programs, information system(s), scanners, anaerobic jars/accessories, spectrophotometers, calorimeters, flame photometers, computer-controlled analyzers (chemistry, coagulation, hematology), automatic pipette, Phlebotomy trays/accessories, and personal protective equipment.


Knowledge of CLIA regulations regarding proficiency testing, quality assurance and quality control.

Knowledge of laboratory policies and procedures.

Knowledge of laboratory equipment and testing.

Knowledge of medical terminology.

Knowledge of English grammar, spelling, and punctuation.

Skill in using computer programs and applications.

Skill in operating a variety of laboratory support instrumentation.
