Job Description


The purpose of the Non-Financial Risk Management (NFRM) function is to ensure that the banks Non-Financial Risk exposure is adequately managed in-line with the group wide risk appetite and NFRM framework. To achieve this, the NFRM function requires:

Risk Managers with the experience, seniority and tools to assess complex risks and intervene where they lie outside the bank’s risk appetite.

A comprehensive, integrated, simple and easy to use NFR Framework with supporting technology that assists risk identification, assessment and remediation.

Strong understanding of the businesses combined with regular engagement which would allow NFRM to provide support, review and challenge in line with the 3 Lines of Defence Model.

Close coordination with all Second Line Risk Type Controllers to encourage the production of a holistic view of NFR.

Proper consideration of emerging risks, rather than just current issues.

Effective governance combined with supporting MI that facilitates decision-making.

NFRM is a matrix organization with business / region and functional specialist axes.

The role a NFR country coverage risk specialist has within NFRM is to perform work on Spain & Portugal according to the 3 Lines of Defense model and the NFR mandate. Specifically, a country coverage risk specialist will be expected to provide independent oversight of the implementation of the Group’s NFRM Framework within the country and/or countries and conduct the assessment of material risks and/or key controls (as required) in the country. This role also requires providing the necessary input to senior managers, e.g. Chief Risk Officer and within NFRM, to inform their challenge, approval or veto of the NFRM Framework implementation (e.g. minimum standards, identification of material risk and proposed key controls).

Role description (AVP)

The successful candidate will be expected to provide support for the monitoring and assessment activities on a risk-basis for Spain & Portugal.

This will involve the following NFRM activities:
Initiate and oversee the implementation of NFRM on a country level e.g. perform relevant Level 2 controls, as required by Policies, to quality assure the implementation of the NFR Framework.

Provide senior management of the country/region with information and insights required to manage non-financial risk, provide advice as required.

Ensure delivery of timely reports e.g. on relevant loss data, self-identified issues, open audit findings and comment on developments.

Analyze various operational risk data, such as incidents, metrics, issues and actions, scenarios, key controls to achieve transparency around the country risk profile and top risks.

Perform qualitative review of risk data including internal/external incidents and issues to identify themes.

Conceptualize, prepare and conduct Country Risk Workshops

Prepare and conduct Deep Dive Analysis and ad hoc thematic reviews of current and emerging risks.

Collaborate with peers in other regions to ensure a consistent approach to country risk management is maintained across regions.

Present findings and analysis to support decision making.

Build and develop relationships with key stakeholders across the seniority spectrum and the bank.

Assist with critical country, regional and cross regional change projects

Ensure that policies and procedures remain robust and effective across all activities in countries.


The ideal candidate will have:
Several years of experience in a similar role within financial services.

Relevant experience in a business, risk management or other relevant control function, ideally at a global financial institution or other relevant peer.

In depth understanding of selected non-financial risks across many various risk types.

Sound understanding of Non-Financial Risk Management principles and practices.

Demonstrable experience of developing strong working relationships with team members to facilitate successful risk management within the 3 Lines of Defence model.

Able to engage with senior stakeholders within a high pressure dynamic environment.

Experience of working within projects or working closely with project managers in carrying out large and/or complex initiatives.

First experience in leading teams.

Strong understanding and capability using Microsoft Office – MS Excel, PowerPoint and Word.

Portuguese language strongly recommended.

Fluent in English and possibly in German.

Assertive – must be proactive in forming relationships with key stakeholders to develop good working relationships.
