Job Description

Summary:

Plans, coordinates and evaluates all unit activities impacting patient care delivery; holds self and staff accountable for identification, evaluation, documentation and appropriate intervention of patients’ needs to ensure quality and cost-effective patient care. Maintains accountability for ongoing unit operations, including practice and financial management. Ensures the quality and effectiveness of nursing practice through the implementation of the ANA Code of Ethics and the ANA Scope and Standards of Practice. Utilizes productivity metrics and performance measures to drive labor utilization. Upholds the standards of the system-wide customer service program. Upholds the mission, vision, values, and customer service standards of The MetroHealth System.

Responsibilities:

1. Oversees, supports and makes contributions to patient safety by:

a. Providing a safe environment for patients.

b. Identifying and correcting root causes of errors.

c. Implementing systems to prevent errors.

d. Subscribing to the principles of responsible reporting of adverse occurrences, near misses, and safety concerns.

e. Providing evidence-based care.

2. Ensures the efficient and effective daily operation of the assigned area(s) by:

a. Implementing departmental policy, protocols and procedures

b. Ensures availability and operation of necessary equipment and supplies for patient care.

3. Ensures quality and effectiveness of nursing practice:

a. Ensures the practice of professional nursing and manages the delivery of care. Assesses, plans and implements, the professional practice model and evaluates the delivery of patient care.

4. Promotes customer satisfaction of internal and external customers.

5. Develops and implements recruitment and retention programs for staff.

6. Communication:

a. Establishes effective mechanisms for communicating information with staff.

b. Collaborates with other departments to create systems and problem solve ongoing issues that impact departmental/organizational goals and/or patient care delivery.

c. Ensures staff competency in caring for a culturally diverse patient population.

7. Financial administration:

a. Incorporates best practices to increase productivity and cost efficiency.

b. Develops creative approaches to nursing practice that enhance quality patient care in a cost-effective manner.

8. Participates in program development by:

a. Assisting in the development, implementation, and evaluation of ongoing programs which ensure the delivery of quality nursing and patient care consistent with the hospital mission.

9. Professional Development

Qualifications:

Required:

Graduate of an accredited school of professional nursing.

Bachelors of Science in Nursing.

Current registered nurse licensure in the State of Ohio.

At least 5 years of experience as a registered nurse.

Demonstrates strong interpersonal, verbal/written communication, delegation, and problem-solving skills.

Nursing certification in specialty area or in nursing management/leadership (e.g. CNML, NE-BC).

Preferred:

Master’s degree in nursing or another health related field.

Physical Requirements:

May need to move around intermittently during the day, including sitting, standing, stooping, bending and ambulating.

May need to remain still for extended periods, including sitting and standing.
