Job Description


Main purpose of role:
Provide effective management of the Traincrew Diagramming work plan on behalf of the Train Planning team to produce a high quality planning product – delivering the most efficient resourcing for an exceptional punctuality railway. This will be achieved through effective workload and manpower planning, mentoring and supporting the work of other Planning & Diagramming Specialists.

Undertake all aspects of long term and short term traincrew diagramming as demanded by the overall workload plan of the train planning department.

Scope out, oversee and undertake train planning projects as required, including traincrew planning for SLC changes, performance led timetable changes and unit and traincrew diagramming feasibility studies


Main responsibilities:
Provide day-to-day leadership of the Traincrew Diagramming team to produce a high quality planning product, maintaining effective workload and manpower planning to achieve required timescales

Oversee production of LTP and STP train crew diagrams

Support long term manpower planning by maintaining structured processes for undertaking diagramming feasibility studies in relation to future schemes, using project management disciplines to remit studies and report findings

Lead the production of crew diagrams that make most efficient and effective use of train crew, retain optimal route knowledge and maximise the benefits of the existing Terms and Conditions

Make effective use of information technology to increase the productivity of the Traincrew Diagramming team

Optioneer the most efficient diagramming solutions in line with business objectives, provide guidance on where changes to Terms and Conditions or diagramming practice may lead to Traincrew productivity savings

Prepare traincrew diagrams that are robust & deliver a train service that will meet the Concession performance targets and issue these in a timely manner

Liaise with Customer Experience to ensure diagrams meet Manpower and Budget plans and to ensure that plans are deliverable within available resources

Support peers in the Train Planning leadership team to achieve their objectives and contribute to a culture of continuous improvement within the wider Planning team

Establish and foster a culture of continuous improvement by leading your team to identify and implement improvements to train planning processes and systems

Key Safety responsibilities and safety training requirements

Your general safety responsibilities are covered in the Employee Safety Manual. You are responsible for making yourself familiar with the contents of the Employee Safety Manual. If there is anything in the Manual you do not understand, or if you are not clear which parts of the manual apply to you, you must contact your line manager for clarification

All employees must have a basic understanding of fire safety unless their role requires them to have more specialised training. You must successfully complete the fire safety training within three months of your appointment to your position

You must receive a safety induction from your manager which includes the following local information:

Location of safety notice board

Location of accident book

First aid arrangements

Location of fire equipment, including fire alarms and extinguisher

It is your responsibility to make sure you familiarise yourself with these arrangements and that you refresh that knowledge on a regular basis

The safety notice board contains much of the information you need. You should check the notice board on a regular basis


Person specification:
Educated to degree level (or equivalent experience)

Excellent IT literacy

Proven track record of effectively leading and motivating teams to achieve deadlines and maintain excellent attention to detail

Ability to undertake project work and report on your findings

Proven success in redesigning business processes to implement faster and smarter ways of working

Track record of building effective and influencing relationships with key stakeholders, including internal customers, peers and suppliers

Knowledge of the London Overground routes and train service plans

Basic understanding of railway operating principles

Good understanding of the Timetable Planning Rules, Engineering Access Statement & the DPPP/CPPP process

Knowledge of traincrew terms and conditions and other agreements
