Job Description

The newly created Peter Grünberg Institute – Neuromorphic Software Eco System (PGI-15) strives to create novel computing technologies that learn and work like the brain, by combining the fundamental and the applied. Our long-term research goal is to emulate high-level, cognitive function in dedicated neuromorphic hardware systems. To achieve this, we study neural circuits and emerging devices as physical substrates that implement a class of machine learning algorithms and design hardware systems that efficiently implement these algorithms. Applications from our research include computer vision, brain-computer interfaces and scientific data analysis.

We are seeking to hire a postdoctoral research scientist to develop neural models and algorithms tailored to the constraints and dynamics of neuromorphic processors. Neuromorphic processors can be equipped with brain-inspired, adaptive, on-line learning capabilities via specialized circuits or emerging memory devices. However, the application of their adaptive capabilities to real-world problems remains hindered by device non-idealities and the lack of adequate tools to program them. In an effort to bring neuromorphic computing technologies closer to real-world applications, this project aims to develop software tools and novel neuromorphic hardware training strategies anchored in machine learning. This project will be done in collaboration with hardware and material researchers at Peter Grünberg Institute.

We are looking to recruit a

Postdoc – Neuromorphic Computing and Engineering

Your Job:
Design neural networks models and training algorithms tailored to the constraints and dynamics of neuromorphic devices.

Develop local learning algorithms compatible with emerging resistive switching devices and inspired by synaptic plasticity in the brain.

Development of a software tool for programming neuromorphic devices.

Support the dissemination of software tools and concepts.

Supervise student projects and BSc/MSc theses.

Write research articles, regularly participate in international conferences to present your work.

Your Profile:
Master’s degree with a subsequent PhD in physics, electrical/electronic engineering, computer science or a related field.

Experience with neural networks, machine learning and machine learning software frameworks

Scientific track record (publications and conference participation).

Strong quantitative background. Knowledge of non-linear dynamical systems modeling is a plus.

Knowledge and experience in programming (e.g. Python, C, C++) and computer skills (e.g. Linux).

Practical knowledge of neuromorphic hardware, edge deep learning accelerators or emerging memory technologies (e.g. memristors).

Excellent ability for cooperative collaboration, interdisciplinary and cross-topical thinking.

Very good communication skills in English, both spoken and written. German language skills are not necessary.
