Pre-Doctoral Fellow Full Time Research Assistant Economics of Child and Youth Development
The Jacobs Center for Productive Youth Development is a scientific center at the University of Zurich focused on youth development. The Center is a joint venture between the University of Zurich and the Jacobs Foundation. We are dedicated to interdisciplinary, developmental research that will ultimately improve the lives of young people. Our primary faculty comes from the fields of economics, psychology, and sociology. We also collaborate with scientists from additional disciplines in our efforts to best understand the first decades of life.
The Department of Economics has developed over the last decade, into a leading research department, consistently ranked among the top five European economics departments. Our two PhD programs attract applications from excellent students from all over the world. The Department’s distinguished faculty members have received several prestigious ERC grants, include current and former editors of leading scholarly journals and have served as presidents of international economic associations.
We are looking for one or two full-time research assistants to work on projects in the field of economics of child and youth development under the supervision of Teodora Boneva and Ulf Zölitz at the University of Zurich. Currently, ongoing projects are in the field of behavioral economics and economics of education. Projects study education policy, peer effect, what factors can explain socio-economic gaps in university enrolment, as well as the causes and consequences of early childhood investments.
The position is based in Zurich, Switzerland, where the research assistant will join a dynamic and inter-disciplinary team of international pre-docs, PhD students, and post-docs. The research assistant will work on projects that involve data collection through surveys, the analysis of large scale register data, analysis of experimental data, and involvement in the design and execution of field experiments. The appointment will be for one year and can be extended by one additional year. The annual salary is competitive.
We expect to involve the candidate in all stages of research – brainstorming, literature reviews, data analysis in Stata, data processing, data visualization, and writing. The successful candidate will contribute centrally to the data work of the projects.
The position would be ideal for a recent graduate who is interested in pursuing a PhD in Economics or a related field. The position offers the possibility to acquire many skills necessary to conduct independent research in applied microeconomics. The candidate must possess (at the time of starting) a Master’s or Bachelor’s degree with excellent grades in Economics or another quantitative field, as well as good knowledge of Stata.
We are looking for a person who enjoys independent problem-solving and thrives on taking high-level directional advice and then running with this advice as far as possible. The ideal candidate has a desire to understand the social world around them and possesses a thirst for answering research questions about how the social environment affects individuals.
