About the Role
School Learning Support Officers provides support for students with identified diverse learning needs including disability in classrooms and other learning environments under the direction and supervision of a teacher to support the achievement of educational outcomes. This support includes student welfare, health and wellbeing activities as required. In addition School Learning Support Officers may provide specific support for students in the following streams or settings: pre-school, vision support, hearing support, and bilingual. Student Learning Support Officers working in these streams/settings have specific additional duties, in addition to the general duties for School Learning Support Officers that are required to be performed.
Working with Children Check Clearance
Completion of mandatory training required by the Department of Education and a willingness to undertake first aid training relevant to the School Learning Support Officer role.
Administration of Medications – training to be provided based on student needs.
Health support training to be provided based on student needs (subject to transition provisions).
Demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a team.
Ability to work with students with emotional, physical or intellectual disabilities.
Awareness of the needs of students with emotional, physical or intellectual disabilities.
Effective communication skills.
This SLSO position supports students with emotional disturbance and behavious disorders, specifically.
Additional School Information (Optional)
Yudi Gunyi School caters for students from 10-17 years of age who need additional support with a range of behaviour and mental health needs. The supports equip them and their referring school with skills and strategies to experience success in a mainstream school, or post school environment. The Metropolitan Lands Council and local elder have been a mainstay of our school since inception in 2003.
The school, in collaboration with Health & Allied Health has developed a new model of care, creating a set of universal teaching skills, collegial support channels and clinical services to improve outcomes for children, ages 4-17, and their families. The scope of services and support use an agreed common-language to collaborate, is trauma-informed and grounded in the principles of neuroscience. At Yudi Gunyi School, a team including specialist teachers, senior psychologist, psychologist, paediatrician, occupational therapist, speech pathologist, art therapist, nurse, chaplain and social worker collaborate together to develop approaches to curriculum and wellbeing that is innovative and integrative.
On its grounds, the school also hosts a Supported Return to School Program for students to participate in for up to 4 weeks, whilst suspended from their mainstream school.
