The role of the System Engineer is to work closely with various stakeholders (Engineering, Customers, Technical Support) to develop application design and/or design IT infrastructure components to meet business and technical requirements. IT infrastructure may include systems, middleware, database, storage and/or network infrastructure, but will almost always have a heavy VMware integration focus.
Qualified candidates will have a strong background with VMware and will demonstrate the ability to efficiently develop, test & certify technology platforms, software and applications. Document design and engineering standards; develop key performance metrics and operational guidelines for consistent & stable design, build, implement and operational processes.
Summary of Duties:
Work closely with Customer Escalation and Technical Support teams to become an expert in understanding customer application and use cases
Provide sustaining or maintenance support to existing software environment, either by implementation or providing guidance to “junior” engineers…heavy VMware focus
Contribute to the design and architecture of new or re-engineered software environments
Collaborates on and implements architecture recommendations to system integration, system administration, problem management, preventive maintenance, and performance tuning
Identifies and eliminates performance bottlenecks and makes performance-related recommendations (hardware, software, configuration)
Review and contribute end user documentation as needed
Analyze test findings and document discrepancies to assist development in resolution
Troubleshoots Pivot3 core software stack reliability, availability, and performance issues
Qualifications & Requirements
B.S. in Computer Engineering, Computer Science or equivalent is strongly preferred
3+ years of experience working and integrating with VMware – VMware experience is required as it’s centric to our solutions. Strong VMware suite troubleshooting experience is a must have.
Proficiency with IP networking in Linux environment (DNS, switching, iptables, etc.)
Experience utilizing Puppet, Chef or other similar technologies to support configuration and deployment of solutions on Linux platforms is a big plus
Experience with working closely with lab or data center management to prep and maintain environments (firmware updates, storage options (DAC, SAN), and hardware components (HDD, NIC & memory).
Some understanding of iSCSI is a big plus
Good understanding of performance monitoring and hardware limitations of enterprise level servers
Experience in deploying solutions leveraging cloud technologies such as OpenStack, AWS and/or Azure is a big plus
Assertive communication and ability to influence cross functional stakeholders to make best decisions for the company and clients
Strong written and verbal communications are a must
Ability to troubleshoot issues by reading logs (e.g. VMware logs)
