Technology Director, Nylon Polymer Job at Ascend Performance Materials – 3.3 in Pensacola, FL
As a key member of the global Nylon Technology organization, the Technology Director, Nylon Polymer will play a critical role in development of new polymer products, new processes including Compounding, Quality improvements, and polymer Capacity additions for Ascend Performance Materials’ Nylon business. Specifically, this position will support business growth of Nylon Polymer at 3 major sites in North America. This role will partner with polymer plant operations, engineering, engineering plastics and fiber technology, and quality departments to ensure that customers’ and business needs are being met. This person will lead the process engineering, and process technology functions. This position offers a challenging environment with broad responsibility and opportunities for growth in technical experience, personal and professional growth. It reports into the VP of Nylon Technology but will be expected to interact daily with all three sites plus the sales and marketing organization. It is expected that the person set an example of leadership and people development based on mutual respect, humility, and trust. This role will supervise and develop a team of 20-25 people including pilot plant operations.
Drive growth and productivity projects aligned with business vision using A2E and DMAIC approach.
Develop an excellent, collaborative working relationship with Business and functional leadership to execute the right set of projects at the right time, insuring each project has the right scope (based on Business needs), the right target costs, and the right execution strategy.
Utilize the Stage-Gate process to help prioritize the highest value programs and projects.
Lead team on delivery of projects which balance Quality, Cost, and Time. Develop a deep understanding of Entitlement and find ways to get there most effectively.
Drive Entitlement: Develop and implement process and production capability using A2E methodology to deliver Entitlement Quality, and find innovative ways to increase capacity and flexibility based on long range business plans.
Share Best Practice & Learning: Establish a system to develop and fill the technical knowledge gaps of direct reports and broader technology team.
Effective implementation of CAPEX projects with entitlement view.
Develop and implement Standard Operating procedures for new processes and new products aligned with polymer operations.
Develop talent with a balance of technical strength, business acumen, and people leadership.
Understand voice of the customer (VOC) to develop, evaluate, and implement new and improved process and product ideas and projects.
Lead scale-up processes from lab to manufacturing.
Drive product quality to Entitlement, while maximizing rates and yields in our present processes.
Improve asset capabilities to meet market and customer requirements.
Lead teams and direct reports focused on product and quality initiatives.
Direct internal and external experts, vendors, and other outside consultants to develop and implement improvements.
Provide technical guidance on areas of expertise to plant manufacturing and engineering organizations, as well as Sales and Technical Services functions.

Process Engineering, and Process Technology
Actively participates on the Business Leadership Team and insures proper alignment around Production, Process Engineering, and process technology expectations and goals.
A broad understanding and relevant experience of technology and manufacturing processes and systems are essential for this position with a record of achievement in growth businesses by participating at the business strategy level
Doctoral degree in Chemical Engineering or related field.
10 years’ plus experience in Polymer, Chemical, or petrochemicals with at least 5 years leading a Technology department.
Leadership Skills that reflect the ability to develop technical talent and the willingness to roll up the sleeves and be uniquely involved in production and process opportunities.
Strong communication skills are necessary. Results will need to be communicated and presented to advanced degree engineers and business leaders.
Analytical and problem solving skills are needed to accurately interpret and understand process data.
Demonstrated record of leading and facilitating cross-functional teams to deliver results.
High level of dedication to meeting customer requests and required time commitments.
Aptitude for relating manufacturing activities and processes to financial outcomes.
Demonstrate use of collaboration and indirect influence skills.
Proven track record of results and ability to partner with all levels within the organization.
Professional Engineer certification an advantage

A thorough understanding of chemical engineering fundamentals and processes

Polymer processing experience would be a great advantage
Understanding of polyamide industry would also be a plus
Results-oriented with good interpersonal communication and team development skills. This position requires hands-on knowledge of chemical processes for troubleshooting and development support.
The individual will be expected to work closely with Product technology, chemical intermediates, to identify and develop solutions to meet performance and flexibility needs for production and business conditions.
Strong analytical and technical skills, ability to solve complex problems, ability to innovate, and a strategic business perspective.
Ability to work with interdisciplinary and cross-functional teams to take a concept to plant implementation.
Ability to work with internal customer service and external customer personnel.
This job will require travel for customer visits and internal meetings. Travel may be domestic or foreign.
Knowledge of computer systems and software related to process control and optimization. At a minimum, candidate should have experience with Excel spreadsheet functions and layouts; JMP, or Minitab, or a similar statistical analysis program; and data collection programs. Experience with Provox, DMACS, Aspen, or similar packages are a plus.
Design of experiments knowledge, analysis of data, time-series analysis, and related methods of collecting and interpreting data is required.
A strong bias to “act on facts”, probe and “test” logic and develop creative solutions.
The confidence to deal with ambiguity and take risks to achieve better results while clearly articulating and planning to mitigate them if not fully successful
Business acumen and a predisposition to “zero” and “activity” based managerial accounting and financial analysis
