We are currently looking for a UTM CommunicationsSystems Engineer to join Thales in Syracuse, NY. The Digital Aviation Solution (DAS) (Thales USA) team is currently adding an UTM CommunicationsSystems Engineer to its team to address the integration challenge of unmanned aircraft systems into the national airspace system. UAS Traffic Management (UTM) is changing aviation and Thales is seeking qualified systems engineering with background in surveillance and/or command and control communications (C2) expertise. The team has identified an urgent need to grow its systems engineering team capabilities by adding qualified technical engineers in the Syracuse, NY, office.

Thales provides mission critical services to airlines, airports, and air navigation service providers around the world. Thales has created a new software as a service (SaaS) model aimed at improving aeronautical operations by leveraging cloud based technologies (machine learning, artificial intelligence, etc.). The provision of capabilities for enabling safe and efficient operation of Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) – also called UAS Traffic Management (UTM) – is a growing market need and one application targeted by this new product. Thales is seeking outstanding engineering professionals to assist with the development and deployment of this breakthrough capability

Key Responsibilities:
Participate in the definition of future concepts and systems, taking account of operational constraints and new functions that are required, as well as emerging technologies

Lead different systems engineering efforts – a ‘hands on’ role both managing engineering resources as well as participating in the system engineering effort

Conduct studies, perform system requirements analysis, formalize requirements, assesses feasibility, and produce models / simulations / demonstrators. Provide product teams with the data required for designing the system; define performance

Write, in a concise and precise manner, specification and interface documents to formalize system content, interfaces and features

Collaborate with the solution development teams to create and implement a solution development plan which will achieve technical, operational and market requirements (including necessary documentation and design/project reviews)

Contribute to the development and plan for implementation and validation of the solutions including verification and validation activities to ensure compliance to performance and safety requirements

Contribute to the solution roadmap management as well as the business development / marketing strategy

Interface in a constructive manner with internal and external teams/partners (product teams, laboratories, universities, government agencies, SMEs, etc.) to ensure successful progress toward solution development and deployment

Contribute to technical proposal/task order preparation and review

Perform technical customer presentations and organize, setup and perform customer demonstrations

Act as thought leader participating in working groups, standards bodies and industry events

Acquire and disseminate market intelligence and competitors’ knowledge

Build and maintain product maturity in a “Minimum Viable Product” approach

Up to 40% domestic and international travel may be required.

Required Skills and Experience:
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or an related degree with a minimum of 5 to 8+ years of experience, or a Master’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or a related field in a comparable field with a minimum of 4+ years of experience.

5 to 7 years of experience in software intensive system design and development

Experience with SW-based systems engineering and verification/validation

Experience designing, developing and integrating complex systems

Experience with web based applications (HTML5, API, web services, JSON, etc)

Cloud hosting experience (Azure, AWS, etc.)

Experience with effective oral and written communications and the ability to manage multiple projects

Experience in surveillance data processing and/or command and control solutions for on-board UAS tracking and command and control

Must meet US ITAR and export control eligibility requirements

Preferred Qualifications:
Knowledge of aeronautical / Air Traffic Management data, systems & culture

Knowledge of UAS platforms

Experience of the full systems engineering lifecycle

Experience of CSCI and systems integration & test activities – Ideally working on ATM systems. requirements management safety management maintenance of baseline documentation compliance with national and international standards

Spanish / French Language Skills Preferred

Hands on team leadership with strong interpersonal skills

Excellent organizational skills and work ethic

Ability to work in a team environment and interact with local/remote employees in a multicultural team

High attention to detail

Willingness to support product line architecture principles and avoid “not invented here” behavior

Agility and flexibility to work in a dynamic market with considerable ambiguity and uncertainty
